Take Flight activities

Aviation on the Ground: Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) activities are available at Wings over Wairarapa Air Festival 2023.

Ground activities will look different at Wings 2023 as we revamp our STEAM Programme to Take Flight. Our Take Flight focus on STEAM and inspiring youth into aviation careers includes a comprehensive list of engaging and interacting activities and demonstrations.

Some of our activities will engage a limited number of young people at a time, and some are designed for large groups of people to gather around and enjoy. Most are free, some are very low cost.

Here’s a snapshot of what will be available.
(please note that there may be slight unavoidable changes made to some activities)

A map will be coming so you know where to head to first. Stay tuned.

The VR training system was developed in Australia to supplement Boeing’s physical Starliner simulator and provides a training alternative for astronauts to perform procedures and familiarise themselves with operating the capsule. Members of the public can try out the CST-100 Starliner VR Trainer used by astronauts and practice using the controls of the CST-100 Starliner to dock with the International Space Station, all in virtual reality.

  • Bridges to Schools by Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

This ICE initiative is to help young people see what engineers do and enable them to be an engineer by building a scale version of a real bridge. They may eventually consider a career in engineering or science.

It’s also a way of tapping into a technical talent that may otherwise go undiscovered.

It requires students to work as a team and to identify and then solve problems when things don’t fit – just like in a big engineering project. When it is all constructed, they can walk on it and test it, just like bridges they use in daily life.

  • Defence Technology Agency - NZDF

Alongside their teachers and mentors, students plan, engineer, and manufacture electric karts and bikes – all with sustainability (and race day) in mind.

At Take Flight, EVolocity will be exhibiting with student karts on display - come along to chat with their team about the innovation and mahi of our young people.
