WE WILL REMEMBER!
Well what an understatement the “We Will Remember” theme turned out to be! We have just paddled to the edge of the lake that Hood Aerodrome became on Sunday and are beginning the inevitable job of cleaning up! For those of you that we have not already communicated with directly we are as disappointed as you that we had to cancel the show on Sunday however the four inches of rain on Sunday morning left us with little choice. Hopefully those of you that joined us on Friday and Saturday enjoyed yourselves and what you saw was enough to whet your appetite for 2013!
REFUND POLICY
For those of you who had pre-purchased tickets for the Sunday of the show, refunds are being managed through Ticketek (0800 TICKETEK or www.ticketek.co.nz) and we ask those of you affected to contact them directly. Although the processing of these refunds is at an additional cost to us we stand by our policy of employing a ticketing agency to independently manage our tickets to ensure that in this very unlikely event of a cancellation you get your money back. There have been some occasions where air shows have been cancelled and people haven’t received their money back - we certainly don’t want any of our visitors to be put in that situation.
VETERANS
The weather aside one of the many highlights that we did enjoy over the weekend was the company of the many WWII veterans who joined us and got to be reunited with some of their old mates and their old aircraft to boot! We have had feedback from a number of people saying how moving the tribute to them was not to mention having the opportunity to meet with a number of them and to get their autographs. I know that they all enjoyed themselves immensely and we look forward to seeing as many of them as are able back again in 2013.
FLYING DISPLAY
Despite the weather that eventually led to the cancellation of the Sunday display, the standard of the flying display and aircraft on the Friday and Saturday was second to none. Airshow attendees were treated to WOW debuts of the two Vintage Aviator BE2’s along with the rest of the collection that flew on both days. These WWI aircraft are relatively new on the airshow scene, but they have quickly become a crowd favourite. The two civilian display teams, the Roaring Forties and the Russian Knights had the large crowd on their feet during their respective displays. As did Doug Brooker in his MX2. The RNZAF put on their usual tight display with the Red Checkers welcomed back onto the display circuit by everyone. The C-130 display was a highlight for many. As part of the Cessna 180 / 185 birthday there was not only a large collection of the type on the field, but also a fantastic display was put on showing the type off to many who had never seen them in action before. The high speed display put on by the jets was something not many had seen before. The two ship L-39 formation and the Vampire put on a crowd pleasing display that not many had seen before, but would be keen to see again. As always, the airshow highlight for many was the display by Keith Skilling in the Corsair. The high speed passes and aerobatic manoeuvres of this aircraft was just breath taking. The two P-40’s and the ME108 also put on a spirited display, once again underling the crowd pulling ability of the WW2 era aircraft. Along with the ground theatre that was part of the show ending airfield attack, these aircraft keep the crowd enthralled until the very end.
PHOTOS TO FACEBOOK
There have already been some great photos from Saturday’s show posted on our Face book page (if you are not already a friend check it out on www.facebook.com/WOWairshow) so any of you with photos that you would like to share please feel free to post them for all to enjoy.
Please do contact us (email: info@wings.org.nz) if there is any specific information about the 2011 or future shows that you require; if not watch this space for regular newsletters.
Again we thank you for your understanding and support of Sunday’s cancellation (please believe that if we could have given you a three day show we would have!) but we hope that a good many of you got to have a great weekend anyway! We look forward to seeing you in 2013!
Best wishes from all of us.

NEARLY THERE!
There is a rumour going around that Santa is considering a last minute upgrade of the sleigh this year. Around this office we are leaning towards his final choice being a Spitfire or possibly the Christmas red of the Venom will sway him. Then again being the traditional sort of guy that he is he’ll possibly stick with one of the WWI classic aircraft. Either way if you miss him tomorrow night rest assured that you will see all those and countless more fantastic aircraft at next month’s Wings Over Wairarapa air show. Some of the other highlights will include:
ME108B
Reappearing in the skies over Wairarapa is New Zealand’s only WW2 Axis aircraft, the ME108B. Looking similar to it's fighter brother, the BF109, the 108B was built as a four seater touring aircraft. This example is a post war French built example renamed as a Nord 1002, but it wears the paint scheme of a WW2 liaison aircraft. It's always a crowd favourite, both on the ground and during the aerial battles with Allied aircraft, the crackling from it's gas guns, it's ability to turn inside the other aircraft and finally it's smoky departure as the Allied aircraft eventually wins the day.
SNEAK PREVIEW
In a departure from previous air shows, as you will be aware Wings Over Wairarapa is now a three day airshow, with Friday now an Official Practice Day. While there won’t be a fixed flying programme during the afternoon from 5-00pm to 7-00pm there will be a WW1 flying display featuring the aircraft of The Vintage Aviator, which are based at Hood Aerodrome. The famous WW1 fighters, SE5a's, Camel, Fokker Triplanes and more. So why not take an extra day and come and see us on Friday as well and soak up the atmosphere as the airshow starts to wind up.

OUR NEIGHBOURS FROM ACROSS THE DITCH!
We are delighted with the huge interest from people travelling from Australia for the show. We are very much looking forward to extending some good old fashioned Wairarapa hospitality to our visitors and promise you a truly unique show. For those of you that maybe interested in including it in with a wider tour there are still limited places left on both the Grand Pacific Tours (www.grandpacifictours.com) and Kirra Holdiay (www.kirratours.co.nz) tours out of Australia to Wings but you need to be quick!
IN THE AIR AND ON THE GROUND
While a lot of the excitement of the show is in the air there will also be just as much to see on the ground. One of the really exciting sites at the show will feature the Hulme Supercar. Named in honour of New Zealand's only Formula One World Champion, Denny Hulme, the Hulme Supercar concept is a high performance mid-engined road car that gives the excitement of driving a Formula One car on the road. Not only does this car look fantastic but you will also get to see it going through its paces during the lunchtime break and that’s something not to be missed! Other static displays will feature the old favourite stationary and traction engines, model aircraft, Segways rides and children’s entertainment – and that’s before you even get to the food and wine marquee!!
The vintage military static display area will have a whole new look this year with a Reinactors Camp being a central feature. There will also be a German half track, a Scorpian and a Lloyd tank and a modern day ex Army Hummer - the kids will love this one! Rides will be available on a number of the vehicles so there will be something for the whole family!
STOCKING FILLERS
And for those of you who, like me, are leaving even thinking about Christmas shopping until tomorrow remember Wings Over Wairarapa tickets are on sale through all Ticketek retail outlets, by phoning 0800 TICKETEK or on line through www.ticketek.co.nz – too easy!

‘TIS THE SEASON…
The sun is shining, Santa is about to take flight and there are only six weeks until the best Wings Over Wairarapa yet! Does it get any better than that?!
‘TIS THE SEASON
If you’re stuck for Christmas presents what about shouting that special person a Gold Pass to the air show – the best seats in the house, complimentary lunch and VIP parking are just some of the benefits. Or perhaps give them a family pass as an excuse to get the extended family together for a day out to remember?? These are just some of the many ways you can visit Wings this year.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
Cessna 180/185 owners are becoming very aware that only two months separate them from the congregation of the biggest flock of the types that New Zealand has ever seen or is likely to see again. This celebration of the FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY of the 185 will be led by the first of the type to be delivered to New Zealand; ZK-CAK arrived in May 1961, serial number 0017. In its company will be 180s; BDD and BDE, the first two of that type, first arriving in NZ in August 1953. ANOTHER SEVENTY SEVEN of these aircraft will join these three at WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA in January. These aeroplanes will come from all the towns, rivers, gullies, and backblock farms and stations where only a self respecting 180 or 185 would reside. Mount Cook Airlines are very kindly bringing ZK-CBS a 17500hr veteran ski-plane of the high South Island glaciers. Birthday celebrations will continue on Saturday evening where a guest speaker will trace the history of the hardworking 185 which is said to be equalled by only one other aircraft and that is its feisty older sister. Late registrations can be made to Jeff Griffith at pam-jeff@xtra.co.nz
If you are attending the reunion or just flying in to enjoy the show check out the AIP supplement on the HOW TO GET THERE page on our website for all you need to know.
WE WILL REMEMBER
As you will be aware the theme of the 2011 show is ‘We Will Remember’ and will celebrate not only the aircraft but also the men and women who shaped the history of aviation, making it a tribute show not to be missed. In light of this the show’s executive have decided to recognise all Veterans of WW2 by welcoming them into the Wings Over Wairarapa Official Enclosure on the flight line. This will enable them to enjoy the company of other ex-servicemen and women and at the same time be close to the action as aircraft of both World Wars perform. All that is required is that they pay the admission for the day. This offer is not restricted to ex Air Forces personnel, but applies to all services. Anyone wishing to take up this offer and see a first class Airshow should apply now to: Reg Wellington, 18B Ruihi Street, ROTORUA 3010. ph. 07 346 2922 or email poneke@ihug.co.nz

THE 2011 WINGS OVER WAIRARAPA TEAM!
![]()
Well its now only four months to go and counting and things are really gearing up at Trust House Wings Over Wairarapa HQ!
DISPLAY AIRCRAFT
Check out the Display Aircraft page on our website for recent announcements of aircraft that you will see at 2011 show. One of the features of Wings Over Wairarapa has always been the huge variety of aircraft that you can see there and believe me 2011 will be no exception. From the world renown Vintage Aviator Collection (the largest privately owned collection of WWI aircraft in the world!) and the heavy metal of the WWII aircraft to the adrenalin inspiring agricultural and solo aerobatic displays – there will be something for everyone!
One of things that we are particularly looking forward is that for the first time in a number of years, two Supermarine Spitfires will appear at a New Zealand airshow. Doug Brooker's rare two seat tr.IX and Brendon Deere's mk.IX. While Brendon's Spitfire has made a number of appearances around New Zealand, this will be the first appearance by Doug's at a large event, something enthusiasts from all over the country have been looking forward to.
Another thing to look out for will be the Jet displays. While Jets have always been a part of the airshow with Vampires and an L-39 in the past, for the 2011 airshow, not only will the Vampires be back, there will also be one of their younger brothers taking part. A Venom will appear for the first time in New Zealand skies for a very long time PLUS not just one L-39, but a number of them flying as a formation team.
Keep an eye on our website for further announcements!
TRADE SITES
We have an unprecedented amount of interest in our trade sites this year however we still have lots of options available. If you are interested in further information about trade sites contact us at info@wings.org.nz.
NICE NEIGHBOURS!!
One of the great bonus’ we have in the Wairarapa is our proximity to Wellington. With virtually unlimited accommodation options available in the Capital in January and a designated air show train to and from there on both the Saturday and Sunday of the show visitors can combine the attractions of one of New Zealand’s most exciting cities with the thrill of the air show.
For further information about Wellington and all it has to offer visit www.wellingtonnz.com or visit www.houseoftravel.co.nz for details on Wellington based domestic packages.
MERCHANDISE
Our new range of merchandise, developed in conjunction with our good friends and neighbours at Tui Brewery, is available through our website. Check out what all well dressed air show patrons will be wearing this year - my personal favourite is the “THEY USED ME FOR THE ACTION SCENES IN TOP GUN – YEAH RIGHT!” tee shirt!
KIRRA HOLIDAYS
Kirra Holidays has recently announced a 12 day tour starting in Auckland and meandering its way through the many scenic highlights on the North Island before finishing at Wings Over Wairarapa. For further information visit www.kirratours.co.nz
